Number types compatible with WhatsApp Business API
WhatsApp Business API accepts: national landline numbers, mobile numbers, VoIP numbers (with some verification process limitations), and international numbers. It does not accept toll-free or shared numbers.
The number must be able to receive a voice call or SMS for the initial verification process: during registration, WhatsApp sends an OTP code via call or SMS.
Practical options for a dedicated number
Most common options for a dedicated WhatsApp Business API number: mobile SIM on a carrier, VoIP number from a provider like Twilio or Bandwidth, fixed line from a telephony operator.
If your company operates in multiple countries, you can register local numbers for each country in your WABA. This allows sending messages with a local sender that increases recipient trust.
What happens to the number after registration
Once the number is registered on WhatsApp Business API, it cannot be used simultaneously on the personal WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app. The number becomes exclusive for API use.
Registration process with Chat API
With Chat API, the number registration process for the Business API is guided by the onboarding team. The process includes: Meta Business Manager verification, WABA creation, number registration, OTP verification and initial business profile setup.
